THUNDER BAY - The people of Thunder Bay will be ringing in the New Year in extreme cold, as an arctic air mass once again brings frigid temperatures to the region.

An extreme cold warning was issued early Sunday morning as temperatures reached -29C and with windchills making it feel like -40C.

Some relief is expected during the day, with windchill values becoming more moderate, but the temperature is expected to drop down again this evening and overnight, with windchills making it feel like -39C.

The cold is expected to continue into Monday, which may result in the extreme cold warning being extended. Temperatures will remain near the -30C mark for the next several days, with warmer temperatures of between -18C and -12C expected to arrive by the weekend.

Extreme cold can pose dangers to people and pets. Exposed skin may be subject to frostbite in a matter of minutes and prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures could lead to hypothermia.
