THUNDER BAY – A wide swatch of Northwestern Ontario sits under an extreme heat warning over the weekend, with temperatures expected to exceed 30 C in areas from Kakabeka Falls to Kenora.

It’s the first heat event of the season for the region, reported Environment Canada.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-thirties across much of the Northwest, with overnight lows near 18 expected to provide little relief from the heat.

There will be a reprieve from the heat Sunday night, but the heat event may return from Monday to Wednesday.

While the heat warnings did not yet include the City of Thunder Bay as of Saturday afternoon, the area is also expected to see remarkably warm temperatures this week.

A weather pattern drawing warm air from the U.S. deep south could set new temperature records for this time of year in the coming days, said Environment Canada meteorologist Jeff Coulson earlier this week.

The agency warns residents to take precautions in the heat, such as drinking plenty of water and never leaving people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors, said Environment Canada.

Residents can check the latest weather alerts at the agency’s website.
