THUNDER BAY -- That probably isn't Revenue Canada on the phone threatening to issue a warrant for your arrest.
The Thunder Bay Police Service says a familiar telephone scam has resurfaced locally in which callers claim to represent Revenue Canada and demand unpaid taxes under threat of arrest.
Police assured the public its officers will not be arresting anyone for not paying their taxes in a release issued Monday afternoon, It encouraged anyone receiving such calls to hang up immediately.
"This sense of urgency should be the first clue and send up huge red flags that a fraudster is attempting to have money sent to them before individuals can really think about it," the release reads.
"The way technology has opened up the world, it has allowed for these criminal to have access to anyone right in the comfort of their own home either by phone or over the Internet."
Only those who have experienced financial loss as a result of such schemes are encouraged to call police. Those wishing to report telephone scams are encouraged to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
