Family of 3 rescued from second floor of burning East End home

Main floor tenants escaped flames through front door of home.

THUNDER BAY -- A  woman and two children had to be rescued Friday night after a fire trapped them on the second-storey of their East End home.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said they arrived at the burning home, at the corner of Connolly and McLaughlin streets, at about 10 p.m. to find heavy flames and smoke at the rear of the two-store structure.

The main-floor tenants escaped through the front door, but the second-storey tenants needed to be rescued by firefighters, who removed them from the home by a front window and took them to safety down a ladder.

The woman and her children were not injured, but were cared for by paramedics.

Firefighters then quickly advanced the line to get water onto the flames and prevent an exposure fire.

A neighbouring duplex did sustain some exposure damage due to the heat.

Firefighters, who are still investigating the incident, say it's important for everyone to have a fire escape plan and that all family members know what to do in case of an emergency.
