Family of missing person Latanya Tait appeals for public’s help

The last confirmed sighting of Latanya Tait was on the morning of Jan. 1, 2023 in the Oliver Road area near the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Lakehead University

THUNDER BAY — The family of 25-year-old Latanya Tait, who was last seen more than two weeks ago on the city’s north side, is pleading for her safe return home and for the public’s help in finding her.

“Latanya, if you are out there, if you can see me, let us know,” said Norman Moonias, Latanya’s father. “Message us. If you’re out there, message, call us, right away. Please.”

The last confirmed sighting of Tait was on Jan. 1 at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the Oliver Road area near the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Lakehead University.

Moonias said he normally speaks with his daughter every few weeks, but he has not heard from her since November.

“Lately, it hasn’t been going like that at all,” he said. “By December I started to grow concerned about her, so I really need to know if she’s okay, if she’s alive, if she’s troubled. Her sisters and brothers are constantly asking me every day if I’ve found her.”

Thunder Bay Police Service Det. Sgt. Rob Gombola said Tait has many friends and family in the area who investigators have spoken with, but no information has come to light of any other sightings after Jan. 1.

“We have sent a provincial alert to our policing partners in the event Latanya has travelled outside the area of Thunder Bay,” he said. “We are again appealing to the public to provide any information that would lead to the whereabouts of Latanya.”

Gombola added that Tait has been known to travel to numerous areas of the city.

“At this time we are not looking at doing a ground search,” he said. “We will take the information as we see it and make a determination from there if a ground search is warranted.”

Tait is described as an Indigenous woman, standing five-foot-10 with a medium build. She has medium length curly brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a dark parka with fur around the hood, a purple hoodie, black pants, and black running shoes.

Anyone with information about the possible whereabouts of Latanya Tait is encouraged to contact the Thunder Bay Police Service at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers.
