Ottawa is giving financial support to a remote Northwestern Ontario First Nations community that's declared a state of emergency as a result criminal activity.
The Eabametoong First Nation says recent murders and arsons have overwhelmed the community.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has responded by with $275,000 for staff and basic supplies for patrols and to repair the community's only school.
Indian Affairs Minister John Duncan said one possible option is to call in a reserve military unit with a large Aboriginal component such as the Canadian Rangers.
