Festival of India returns to Marina Park

Festival runs through 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

THUNDER BAY – The Festival of India is back in all its glory.

Crowds flocked to Marina Park on Saturday afternoon, marching behind chanting singers and dancers leading an 18-foot chariot along the waterfront, kicking off a five-hour celebration honouring the food, music, culture and traditions of India.

It’s great to be back, said organizer Dr. Prashant Jani.

It’s also great to share his culture with the rest of the city, promoting unity and harmony for all.

“We are all from different parts of the world, but we are all here to love and celebrate each other and make life joyful with celebration,” he said.

The parade was the highlight of the afternoon.

“This is a tradition coming back from India. In the eastern part of India there’s a place ... where there’s a 40-foot high chariot. We can’t have it 40-feet high, but we at least tried to have an 18-foot chariot, and the chariot is representation of love, unity and peace in the community,” Jani said.

“That is what is required for happy and joyful lives. So when we are pulling the chariot, singing along with it, dancing along with it, playing the drums, it’s a wonderful experience on the street. I think we should be going on Memorial Avenue or the Harbour Expressway, but we’re just limiting ourselves to Marina Park. We don’t want to upset the traffic.”

There was a little something for everyone.

Lines started forming early for the free Indian food, while others took advantage of the children’s activities and still others were there for music and dancing on the main stage.

The Festival of India, which is free to everyone, runs until 8 p.m. Food vendors are also on site.

On Sunday, the Festival of Colours is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Marina Park.

There is a $10 entry fee. Meals are extra.
