RED LAKE, ON — Ontario Provincial Police say two people died Sunday, November 4 after a late model pickup truck left the roadway on Highway 105 and struck boulders and a tree.
The 11:15 AM collision near the Highway 125 intersection caused the truck's fuel tank to rupture and catch fire.
Police said a passerby came upon the accident and located the two individuals in the vehicle, but was unable to extricate them due to the amount of damage the truck had sustained.
Patrolling OPP officers who had observed a large plume of smoke from a distance arrived shortly after and found the vehicle engulfed in flames.
With the civilian's assistance, they tried to get the two occupants out of the vehicle, but were only able to remove the passenger.
At the Red Lake hospital, the person was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say they will release the victims' identities once their families are notified.
