THUNDER BAY – The Kam River Fighting Walleye are bringing back the Teleco Cup, a four-team tournament taking place from Sept. 10 to Sept. 12 at the NorWest Arena.
The Superior International Junior Hockey League team, entering its second season, has altered the format of the tournament, turning it into a round-robin affair featuring the Wisconsin Lumberjacks, the Fort Frances Lakers and the LJHL Selects, a team of top players from the Lakehead Junior Hockey League.
Last year’s edition featured an eight-game set against their SIJHL rivals, the Thunder Bay North Stars.
“We are very excited to have these three teams join us for the Teleco Cup,” said Fighting Walleye general manager Kevin McCallum, in a release issued by the team.
“We are excited to see our future rivals in Wisconsin and Fort Frances join us and get ready for the season, and having the LJHL Selects is an opportunity for all SIJHL teams involved to find potential players and affiliates, which goes a long way for all our clubs, and to showcase their product.”
McCallum said the Fighting Walleye hope to turn the tournament into an annual tradition, one with an even broader appeal.
“We look forward to growing the event each year,” added McCallum. “We had the opportunity to have NOJHL and MJHL teams involved this season but with the uncertainty of the pandemic we kept it to our branch.”
Tickets for the eight-game event are available online or at the Fighting Walleye’s website.
