Fighting Walleye edge Lumberjacks in shootout

THUNDER BAY – Jack Cook scored the winner in a shootout to help the Kam River Fighting Walleye preserve a weekend sweep with a 5-4 win over the visiting Wisconsin Lumberjacks on Saturday night.

Ryder McMillen and Zach Carson scored third period goals for the Lumberjacks, who trailed 4-2 after Carson Gorst put the puck past Wisconsin goalie Keegan Strong at 6:26 of the third.

Cook also scored in regulation for Kam River, his fifth of the season, with singles going to Max Buffone and Euan Morrison.

Morrison finished with a goal and two assists.

Dillon Phillips, who beat Eric Vanska at 3:59 of the third, and Salvatore Poggiali, with the lone goal of the first, had Wisconsin’s other tallies.

Strong was good on 46 of 50 Fighting Walleye shots, while Vanska stoped 31 of the 35 directed his way.

Red Lake 5, Fort Frances 2: The Miners got goals from five different players to pick up their second win of the weekend, handing the Lakers their fifth straight loss. The second-place Miners improved to 11-8-2, nine points back of first-place Kam River (16-4-1), winners of six in a row. Kyle Schechtel had a goal and two helpers for Red Lake, while Mason Mowat and Dayvan Bull picked up a goal and an assist apiece. Jack Wood and Brady Krentz scored for the Lakers (2-14-0).
