As renovations on a local landmark continue, the province kicked in additional funding to ensure the work is complete.

With a $2.1 million face lift ongoing, the Finnish Labour Temple received $300,000 from the Norhtern Heritage Fund Corporation Tuesday afternoon. That’s on top of $500,000 the NOHFC gave the 100-year-old building in 2008. Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle said when requests from the building’s board of directors came in, there was "enthusiastic support".

"When they came back to us looking for more support," Gravelle said. "The board members saw this as an extremely good investment."

The labour temple was also given $125,000 by the Trillium foundation previously bringing the provincial commitment to $925,000. Gravelle said it’s money well spent.

"For part of out culture in Thunder Bay really you can’t put a price on that," Gravelle said. "It’s so important that we help maintain it."

Phase one of construction, which includes handicap access and fire suppression, are almost complete said Finlandia Association of Thunder Bay board of director president Marvin Salmi. Salmi said they’re hoping to complete renovations to the roof and heating by winter so interior renovations can begin. The board is hoping to have construction complete, including restoration to the exterior, by March of 2012.

"We’re covered (financially) now," Salmi said. "It’s truly appreciated."
