THUNDER BAY - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of a fire that prompted evacuations at a Current River apartment building Friday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from an Adelaide Street apartment building around 1:30 p.m.. Responding units evacuated residents adjacent to a seventh floor apartment where a burning mattress was determined to be the source of the smoke. No one was present in the apartment at the time of the fire, Fire Rescue said.
Responders quickly applied water to knock down the fire. The response included five pumpers, an aerial ladder, and a command unit.
Firefighters also issued shelter-in-place orders for tenants in the building to prevent smoke exposure in hallways and stairwells. Ventilation was later set up to clear the floor of smoke.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which remains under investigation.
