THUNDER BAY – Burn, baby burn.

As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, the fire ban in Thunder Bay will be lifted. The move comes after the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry lifted the fire ban for the District of Thunder Bay at midnight on Thursday. Shuniah will also follow suit, though Neebing has not lifted its ban.

Capt. Kevin Anderson, fire prevention officer at Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, confirmed the change in a brief interview with CKPR Radio.

“Basically it means for the City of Thunder Bay that all recreational burning, for people who have permits, can now burn again, starting at 5 p.m. tonight,” Anderson said.

Recreational fires in Thunder Bay are allowed from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Anderson said cooler weather and rain in the region are likely behind the MNRF’s decision to lift the restricted fire zone throughout the district.

“Hopefully people can enjoy their fires again,” Anderson said.
