THUNDER BAY - Fire crews were kept busy overnight battling a structural fire that caused extensive damage to a south side home.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were called to a structural fire on the 200 block of Bethune Street at approximately 11 p.m. Friday night.
Crews travelling to the scene observed heavy smoke from blocks away and a second alarm was called.
The fire was contained to the single structure after crews worked all night, with efforts being hampered by the older age of the building and personal belongings affecting access.
The owner of the home met arriving crews and was uninjured. There were no other reports of injuries as a result of the fire.
Crews remained on scene Saturday morning putting out hotspots in the structure.
“The damage is extensive,” said acting platoon chief, John Russak. “To the point that it still might be smoldering in places that are unreachable at this time due to circumstances of what’s in the building.”
Five pumper trucks, an aerial ladder, and a total of 22 firefighters responded to the scene.
It is believed the fire started in the basement but the cause is unknown at this time and is under investigation.
