THUNDER BAY - A north side bar sustained minor damage after an early morning fire in the basement triggered an alarm.
According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning, a passerby called 911 to report a possible structural fire at the Foundry Restaurant after hearing an alarm and seeing smoke inside.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke in the building and a second alarm was called. Crews made an initial attack through a front window. Using a thermal camera, crews were able to navigate through the heavy smoke and locate the fire in the basement.
A laundry basket with clothes and rags ignited and triggered the alarm. According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, the fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the immediate area.
No one was inside the building at the time of the fire and there are no reports of injuries. The restaurant sustained minor damage, most of which was contained to the ceiling and sidewall where the fire occurred.
Five pumper trucks responded to the fire, along with an aerial ladder. An official with the ministry of health attended the scene to ensure all food related concerns were dealt with.
The restaurant is expected to reopen when repairs are completed.
