Fire causes severe damage to Simpson Street buildings (13 photos)

A structural fire on Simpson Street resulted in severe damage to at least two structures, including the Hell’s Angel’s Clubhouse

THUNDER BAY - Several buildings sustained heavy damage following a late Tuesday night fire on the city’s south side.

Crews with Thunder Bay Fire rescue were called to the 600 block of Simpson Street late Tuesday after receiving numerous reports of a structural fire.

“When we arrived, we had multiple calls for a structural fire that was located at this area,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Platoon chief, Edward Hill. “When we arrived at the scene, we had flames already pretty much spread between the Hells Angels' house and Rizzo’s Cabinets.”

Heavy smoke could still be seen in the area after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning and crews were still pouring heavy water onto the structure.

Hill said at least two structures were heavily damaged as a result of the fire.

“We seem to have stopped it from spreading further north and the Underground Gym we have kept the fire out of,” he said. “What happens with these fires is the roof collapses and then we try to get the stubborn fire underneath it. It takes a while. Hopefully we stopped the spread.”

Hill added that he does not believe anyone was inside any of the structures at the time of the fire and there are no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Two aerial ladders and five pumpers responded to the fire. Hill said crews are expected to remain on scene into the morning hours on Wednesday.
