Fire crews battle blaze at Odd Fellows Hall

The building on the city’s south side was vacated late last year by order of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit

THUNDER BAY - Fire crews are on the scene of a structural fire on the city’s south side late Sunday evening.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue are battling a fire at the Odd Fellows Hall on May Street.

Heavy smoke poured from the building, as Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters attacked the blaze from all angles, using two aerial pumpers and a steady stream of high-pressure water from several ground locations.

A source at the scene said as a precaution, nearby Shelter House was evacuated and residents were being relocated to a local hotel for the night.

Last November the Thunder Bay District Health Unit ordered the building be vacated due to unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

At the time the building was closed, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit noted there were a lot of combustibles inside the building.

There is no word about whether or not anyone was inside the building at the time the fire broke out.

Firefighters on scene were unable to provide further details at this time, but more information will be added when it becomes available.
