THUNDER BAY – Fire crews were busy responding to three separate fires across the city.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the first fire around 8:30 a.m. Thursday on the 200 block of Leslie Avenue.
The first crew to arrive found heavy smoke coming from a residence. Four pumpers and an aerial device were used to quickly knock down the blaze from outside the structure before heading inside.
Fire officials say there was heavy fire and smoke damage to the home with the kitchen suffering the most.
No one was home at the time and no pets were involved.
The investigation is ongoing.
Fire crews were then called around 8 p.m. Thursday night to the second structure fire on the 400 block of River Street.
Three pumpers arrived to find a north side home had sustained moderate fire and smoke damage to the kitchen.
The occupants were able to evacuate the home.
The caller had stated that their smoke detectors woke them up Friday around 3:20 a.m. and they could hear crackling in the ceiling.
The first arriving pumper crew reported flames were visible from the roof of the home.
According to fire officials, the fire was difficult to access due to the construction of cathedral ceilings lined with one-inch wood. The home's two occupants and their pet escaped.
The damage was extensive.
