THUNDER BAY – Fire crews were on scene late Monday evening at an equipment fire at Bombardier.

According to a release, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structural fire at Bombardier around 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews were directed to an area within the plant where a machine had ignited prior to the arrival of fire fighters.

Fire officials say there was light smoke in the upper atmosphere of the plant.

Fire fighters extended a hose line into the building, however, they discovered the fire had been extinguished by Bombardier workers prior to their evacuation of the building.

After fire crews ensured there was no further extension of fire to other machines they began to clear the smoke from the building using natural ventilation as large overhead doors were opened to allow fresh air in the structure.

The cause of the fire is believed to be due to a spark from a plasma cutter machine, which dropped onto a piece of plastic debris underneath it and ignited it.

Bombardier report no injuries to staff on site and there was no loss to the building or equipment as a result of the incident.
