THUNDER BAY – Fire crews were on scene late Friday morning at a structural fire on the city’s south side.
According to a release, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire around 11 a.m. at a 10-storey apartment building on the 100 block of North May Street.
First arriving unit reported that they had light smoke coming from a sixth floor apartment, and a second alarm was called.
Once at the apartment, firefighters had to breach the door to make entry. Once inside, the officer reported heavy black smoke with fire in the living room area.
Fire crews quickly knocked down the fire before it could spread to adjacent apartments.
A primary search of the apartment was completed with no occupants were found.
Other arriving pumpers were assigned to either back up for the crew inside the fire room or tasked with bringing equipment to the sixth floor, with other crew checking on the floors above the fire in case an evacuation was needed.
The floor above had very light smoke in the hallways, so a protect in place order was given.
The fire was deemed under control.
Ventilation took place to clear all smoke from the building.
