A one-storey Wharton Road residence received heavy damaged from a fire that may have started from the fireplace, fire officials say.
Thunder Bay Fire Service crews responded to a call about a reported problem with a fireplace around 7 a.m. on Sunday. Crews arrived and found heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof. Firefighters brought the fire under control within an hour.
Fire officials say the ceiling in the room where the fire started collapsed shortly after firefighters entered but no one was hurt.
The occupants of the home escaped safely but the house received heavy damage, fire officials say.
The investigation is ongoing to find the cause of the fire.
