THUNDER BAY – As colder temperatures descend on Thunder Bay and waterways begin to freeze over, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials are asking parents to speak to their children about walking on the area’s iced-over lakes, ponds and rivers.

Ice conditions are particularly dangerous in the early stages of winter, when ice has started to form, but is not thick enough to support a person. Slippery river banks and icy shorelines should also be avoided, Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio said in a warning issued on Wednesday.

“Public safety is our main priority, and we ask residents to stay away from all bodies of water this time of year,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio. “Exposure to cold water can end your life in a matter of minutes.”

He went on to say that cold water drops the temperatures of people’s vital organs, which can lead to a loss of consciousness and drowning. Exposure to cold water can also cause heart failure.

“Be safe and be smart, stay off the ice and away from all bodies of water this winter season.”
