THUNDER BAY - An early morning fire sent two people to hospital and forced the evacuation of an apartment complex on the city’s north side.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire in a lower level unit in an apartment complex on Adelaide Street.

A male advised arriving units that a second male was still inside the unit and needed to be rescued. Smoke was already reaching the main level of the complex and when crews entered the lower level, they were met by heavy, black smoke.

The male in the unit was found by crews and rescued. Crews then returned to the unit with a line connected to the building’s hose cabinet and quickly extinguished the fire.

All occupants of the complex were evacuated and are still unable to return due to the lengthy process of clearing smoke out of a building its size.

The two males from the unit were transported to hospital for treatment.

Three pumper rescues, two pumper units, and two ladder trucks, along with 25 fire fighters attended the scene.

The fire is under investigation by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
