THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews made quick work of an apartment fire on South Cumberland Street.

In a release issued on Thursday night, TBFR said they were called to a structure fire in a two-story apartment building just after 4 p.m.. Upon arrival they found heavy smoke coming over the top of the building from the rear of the structure.

Crews attacked from the rear, encountering heavy fire from the windows of an upper-floor unit.

Another crew took on the fire from the front of the building, the two-pronged attack knocking down the contents fire in less than five minutes.

TBFR credited the quick response time, along with the actions of the firefighters, for preventing the fire from spreading to nearby apartment units.

There was extensive damage to the unit involved in the fire, but no injuries to report, as the unit was not occupied.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and residents of the building were eventually allowed to return to their units.

Six pumpers, an aerial ladder and a command unit responded to the fire.
