THUNDER BAY -- Two people were sent to hospital as a precaution and one cat died after a fire broke out in the basement of an Empire Avenue residential building.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters were called to a structural fire on the 300 block of Empire Avenue on Friday afternoon, where they found light smoke visible coming out of the main door and finding a fire in the basement.

A written news release said firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control, totalling extinguishing it a short time later. Fire officials said a closed door help contain most of the damage.

Two occupants of the home were taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre by paramedics. Two dogs and two cats were also in the home, but one of the cats perished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
