A woman was taken to hospital early Thursday for possible smoke inhalation treatment, after a blaze swept through a West Frederica Street apartment unit.

Firefighters from the Brown, James and Vickers street stations responded to the call at approximately 4:40 a.m. and quickly brought the fire under control. All residents of the building, including the two females who lived in the affected unit, had safely removed themselves from danger by the time firefighters arrived on scene.

The family dog and several cats were also saved.

Firefighters, in a release issued Thursday morning, said there was significant fire damage to the kitchen area of the apartment, as well as smoke damage. Minor smoke damage occurred in the complex’s other units.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown, but still under investigation.
