A home in Kaministiquia was completely destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon.
Fire crews from Kaministiquia responded to the fire on Hill Road around 3 p.m. Kaministiquia deputy fire chief David Busby, who was first on the scene, said there is no way to determine the cause of the fire at this time.
"It is two structures it appears to be a woodshed and a house and that’s all I’ve seen at this time. I haven’t been able to go up and take a look due to the heat and the MNR’s efforts," Busby said.
Thick clouds of smoke could be seen from several kilometres away as the fire engulfed the two buildings and caused minor explosions from propane tanks, gas cans and diesel fuel. Fire crews from Lappe and East Gorham were also on scene along with the MNR Ontario rangers.
Dave Cleaveley, MNR planning and information coordinator for Dryden, was on his way to Thunder Bay for a meeting when he saw the smoke. While the fire had spread to the bush at the back of the house, a CL-415 Waterbomber had made several passes over the area to douse the flames.
"It’s not going to go anywhere right now but there still is potential so people will be working on the fire for the next two three four hours," Cleaveley said.
Busby said there were no injuries. The homeowner was home at the time but was able to make it out safely.
"He and his dog did make it out so everybody’s doing good," Busby said.
Busby said the cause of the fire will be determined by the Ontario Fire Marshall.
