THUNDER BAY -- The city is hosting what it terms the largest live fire exercise ever attempted.

Up to 120 Firefighters from Ontario, Manitoba and the northern United States will take part in the event on Friday and Saturday at the city’s fire-training centre. Previously no more than 30 took part.

The exercise will be held in conjunction with FireCon’s 25th anniversary.

It’s a training opportunity aimed at firefighter safety, practicing fire attack and test-incident command.

“Our top priority is always the safety of firefighters,” said Chief John Hay in a release issued Thursday by the city.

“Thunder Bay has one of the safest fire departments in the Province in terms of our response stats, procedures and protocols and policies. We are also leaders in implementing incident management system so we’ve received a lot of interest from visiting chiefs to shadow our incident commanders.”
