Firefighters started to tear down the remains of the Arthur Street Boyer Truck Sales after a massive fire gutted the inside of the building.

Volunteer firefighters spent most of Tuesday night trying to get the massive fire under control. Firefighters battled the blaze until 2 a.m.

The next day smoke and flames could still be seen in the remains of the building.

Oliver-Paipoonge fire Chief Mike Horan said it was a difficult fire to fight because of its size and the cold weather.

Since there were still some flames present, they will need to bring the building down and put out any fires that pop up, he said.

“We didn’t have much of a chance because there were several explosions inside from oxygen tanks, acetylene tanks and propane tanks so we didn’t do any kind of interior attack,” Horan said.

“There was nobody inside the building. Once the explosions started up we backed up from the building. (The owners) had shutdown the building Friday for the holidays and they were going to start up again this morning.

“We don’t know the cause yet. We haven’t investigated it at all.”
