At least six pumpers and an aerial suppression unit responded Wednesday night to an apparent fire inside a building at the mothballed Northern Wood plant on Thunder Bay’s waterfront.

Thunder Bay firefighters were releasing few details at this hour about the blaze, though smoke could be seen rising from the roof of the building, formerly owned by the Buchanan Group.

The call came in just after 9 p.m.

Much of the equipment inside the building is believed to have been auctioned off recently by receivers who took over the plant when the company declared bankruptcy.

The site has been vacant since November 2011, and this is at least the second time fire crews have been called to the Maureen Street property to battle a blaze there in recent months.
