THUNDER BAY – Firefighters quickly extinguished a mattress fire at a Ray Boulevard duplex Monday night.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were called to a blaze Monday around 9 p.m. on the 400 block of Ray Boulevard.The first arriving unit encountered smoke exiting from a rear second story window and a second alarm was called.
Firefighters forced through the front door with an attack hose.
Using a thermal imaging camera through the smoke, firefighters were able to detect higher levels of heat coming from the basement.
A mattress was found on fire along with a few pieces of furniture.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
The fire was contained to the basement area of the one side of the duplex. Residents of the other side were able to return to their home after the air inside was checked for toxic gases.
The occupants of the fire home were not present at the time of the blaze.
Fire damage to the duplex was minimal, with smoke damage through all three levels.
The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious.
