Firefighters called to BioPower mill in Atikokan

There were no reported injuries in an evening fire at the BioPower mill.

ATIKOKAN – An evening fire at the BioPower mill in Atikokan was extinguished early Thursday morning.

Atikokan Fire Rescue crews responded to a large fire Wednesday evening that started outside the mill.

According to Atikokan mayor Dennis Brown the wind blew the fire away from the main building, so it wasn’t damaged.

The fire was extinguished around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, putting the fire out with help from helicopters dropping water.

An employee at the plant said there were no reported injuries.

Atikokan Fire Rescue and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry continue to monitor the area for hot spots.
