A man on snowshoes was convinced by firefighters to abandon his trek onto Lake Superior on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters on an air boat intercepted the man outside the harbour break-wall and warned him he’d technically broken the law to get there.

“His statement was he just wanted to go for a walk. He had some snowshoes with him. He didn’t think anything was wrong with that, however the issue we have is him crossing inside the break-wall,” said on duty platoon Sgt. Larry Warner of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

“The harbourmaster has control of that this time of year and unless you have some permission from there to be out there, you’re not supposed to be out there.”

Warner said they made contact with the man outside the break-wall, which is not illegal.

“So he decided to come back with us because he’d have to return inside the break-wall, which would make him illegal again, so to speak,” Warner said.

“It’s just a reminder to the general public that they’re not supposed to be inside the break-wall on the ice conditions as they are without permission from the harbourmaster.”

No charges have been laid in the incident.
