THUNDER BAY - Plumes of thick black smoke were visible throughout much of the city after a blaze broke out in a trucking company parking lot.

Emergency services responded to the Gardewine property on Balmoral Street late Thursday afternoon after at least one trailer was engulfed in flames.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters were able to contain the fire to the southern portion of the lot and keep it from spreading to other vehicles.

There was no damage to any of the nearby Balmoral Street businesses and there do not appear to be any injuries.

A fire department official said the blaze was caused by an industrial accident and explosions that were reported by passersby were the result of tires popping.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers had blocked off a stretch of Balmoral Street between Cameron Street and Norah Crescent as firefighters battled the blaze but the roadway has since been reopened to vehicular traffic.
