THUNDER BAY — City firefighters were able to contain the damage from a Friday evening fire to one side of a duplex.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said crews were called to a possible structural fire at a two-floor duplex on the 100 block of Dease Street just after 5 p.m.

The arriving firefighters found a fire in the rear interior of the building, which was quickly extinguished before it could extend further.

Fire department officials said multiple occupants of the home were able to escape without injury.

The fire, which was accidental, was caused by materials that had caught fire while the homeowner was cooking.

Fire and water damage was extensive in the room where the fire started, with moderate smoke damage through the rest of the home, fire officials added.
