Firefighters rescue woman from house fire

A tenant sleeping in the basement was unaware of the fire.

THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay firefighters rescued a sleeping tenant from a north-side residence that caught fire Wednesday morning just after 8:30 a.m.

Neighbours called in the alarm after spotting smoke pouring from a second-floor bedroom in a house in the 200 block of Van Horne Street.

When fire crews arrived, flames were visible in the window.

They conducted a search of the residence and found a woman asleep in the basement, unaware there was a fire upstairs.

Paramedics assessed her at the scene but she did not require hospitalization.

A dog was also removed unharmed from the burning house.

According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, damage to the second floor is heavy, and there is smoke and water damage on the main floor.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
