THUNDER BAY - Damage is extensive but no one was injured in a fire Wednesday afternoon in an apartment on May Street.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said numerous members of the public reported the fire in a two-storey building at about 3:20 p.m.

Responding crews encountered thick smoke coming from a second storey window.

Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and made their way to the upper level where an aggressive interior attack brought a kitchen fire under control.

The occupants of the building had already exited, and were all accounted for.

There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the apartment but no damage to a commercial property located in the same building.

The fire department said it is still investigating the cause, but issued a reminder to the public to never leave anything unattended on a stove.
