A pair of small fires at the Thunder Bay District Jail have been contained.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue sent three crews to the MacDougall Street facility early Friday evening, responding to a fire in a small container. While at the jail the alarm sounded again and another fire in another container elsewhere in the building was put out by jail staff. Firefighters then cleared the affected area of hazardous smoke using pressurized fans.
TB Newswatch has learned that earlier in the day the jail’s tactical team was activated because of fears there were weapons inside the correctional facility.
Last month more than 60 prisoners took over the top floor of the jail, holding a guard hostage. Several prisoners and the guard were sent to hospital for treatment of injuries.
