THUNDER BAY —  Firefighters who performed an ice rescue on a northwestern Ontario lake are among those to be honoured this week at an OPP awards ceremony in Thunder Bay.

Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes will preside at the Wednesday evening event recognizing first responders and community members for extraordinary acts.

Members of the Pellatt Fire Department from the Kenora district are receiving awards for a rescue they performed in April 2017.

They saved a husband and wife who had fallen through the ice into the frigid waters of an area lake.

According to the OPP, the firefighters "quick thinking and teamwork saved two lives that day."

An off-duty Nipigon OPP officer who rescued an intoxicated man who had fallen into Lake Superior from a sailboat will also receive an award.

Other recipients include a First Nations constable who performed CPR to revive a suicide victim, and two civilians who rescued a motorist who rolled his vehicle in a snowstorm, leaving him trapped inside with no heat for 16 hours.
