First Nation vote likely to lease land to mill for 51 years

FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION, Ont. -- Members of the Fort William First Nation will hold a vote next month to designate the land that Resolute's sawmill operates on.

FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION, Ont.  -- Members of the Fort William First Nation will hold a vote next month to designate the land that Resolute's sawmill operates on.

The referendum is necessary as the mill sits on more than 1,000 acres of land that was returned to the community in 2011.

If the vote is approved, the lands will be leased to Resolute for the purpose of a sawmill for a term of 51 years.

The vote is more of a formality the community has to go through.

The First Nation’s Director of Lands and Property  Ian Bannon says it's similar to any business that wants to operate on a parcel of property.

If the referendum was voted down, the mill would continue to operate on the property under a permit.

A public information session is planned for Saturday evening at the Fort William First Nation community centre.

The referendum is scheduled to take place on the reserve on Sept. 6.
