THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay-area emergency services vehicles will gather at the Health Sciences Centre this evening as part of an effort to show support for patients.

In a new initiative dubbed "Northern Lights," Thunder Bay Police, OPP, Anishinabek Police Service, railway police, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Superior North EMS will all participate in a parade along the roadway that encircles the hospital.

The drivers will also activate their emergency lights.

According to a news release announcing the event, the goal is to acknowledge patients receiving care, and to reinforce to them and their families that "emergency first responders are supporting their journey to a healthy life."

The statement noted that for some patients, their hospital stay begins with a sudden crisis situation that requires intervention by first responders, and that many times, these interactions are difficult and unpleasant, "and can put up lifelong barriers."

It went on to say that the emergency services personnel hope patients will be comforted by the knowledge that people outside the hospital are thinking of them while they are receiving treatment.

The parade—to be held the last Wednesday of each month—will begin about 7:30 p.m.

Hospital staff will work to ensure patients are able to watch it through a window.
