First section of overpass lifted into position over Water Street

The first section of the pedestrian overpass over Water Street was lifted into position on Tuesday.

THUNDER BAY – The first section of the pedestrian overpass over Water Street was lifted into position by work crews at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Now that the first section is in place, crews will anchor it, and then begin preparing for the next section of the overpass that will be lifted into place next week. Once both sections of the overpass are anchored in place, crews will begin pouring concrete for the concrete deck and will put the glass panels back into place.

The overpass was originally scheduled to be back in place before the winter of 2020, but discovery of worse-than-expected corrosion to the bridge's steel structure set the work back, and caused the project to exceed its $1.3 million dollar budget by an estimated $500,000.

Water Street was fully closed between Red River Road and Van Norman Street on Monday, July 19 and will remain closed for another two weeks.
