First-year marketing students host 'Upcycle' Market Days (2 photos)

First-year marketing students are hosting Upcycled Market Days from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30 in the Shuniah Student Lounge and outside Ryan Hall Cafeteria.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – First-year students in the Business Marketing, Accounting, Human Resources, Business and Business Fundamentals programs at Confederation College are hosting Enterprise Challenge Market Days this week, ending Friday, November 30.

The market runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Shuniah Student Lounge and outside the Ryan Hall Cafeteria. Each day, students will be selling products that they have created by upcycling or repurposing unused materials.

Proceeds from the week-long sale will be donated to Confederation College’s Student Emergency Fund, which includes support of the Student Food Bank.

“The Enterprise Challenge teaches our students the importance of being accountable and emphasizes the critical roles that sustainability and social responsibility play in today’s business environment,” said Erin Oner, Program Coordinator and Professor for Business Marketing.

“With proceeds being contributed to the Student Emergency Fund, it teaches our students the importance of giving back to our community.”

Products range from decorative ornaments, clothing and accessories, pet supplies, home decor, jewellery, woodcrafts, candles, garden supplies and much more.

The 28 student groups have set up shop for the week, selling to the College community. The public is also invited to stop in and do some holiday shopping.

To successfully complete the Enterprise Challenge, each student must first develop their own individual code of ethics using the Seven Sacred Teachings.

Students then work together in teams to create a basic marketing plan, manufacture a new product using repurposed or upcycled materials and promote the sale of that new product.
