THUNDER BAY — Canadian residents can fish for free this weekend.
The province has announced its latest free fishing period, meaning usual requirements around having an outdoors card and fishing licence are waived for the Father’s Day weekend (June 14 and 15).
“This Father’s Day weekend, take the opportunity to head outdoors, cast a line and create lasting memories with the people who matter most,” Mike Harris, the Minister of Natural Resources was quoted as saying in a media release.
“Whether it’s your first-time fishing or a time-honoured family tradition, this is a great way to explore Ontario’s beautiful lakes and rivers while supporting the local communities, jobs and businesses that depend on our province’s diverse fishing opportunities.”
Despite not needing the usual permits for the weekend, the province said all other regulations around things like catch and size limits and where you can and can’t fish still apply. Also, provincial officials said, anyone taking advantage of the free fishing period must have government identification showing their name and date of birth.
The next free fishing period will be Family Fishing Week, running from June 28 to July 6.
