THUNDER BAY - Five more people in the Thunder Bay District have passed away from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 45 since the pandemic began.
This is the highest number of deaths recorded in one day since December when on two separate occasions three deaths were reported in a single day.
The health unit is also reporting 25 new cases, of which six are considered the result of household contacts, six as other close contacts, 10 with no known exposure, and three pending.
Of the new cases, 21 are from Thunder Bay and surrounding areas and four in district communities.
The health unit is reporting 39 more cases as resolved, bringing the active case count to 286 and the first time the number of active cases has fallen to under 300 since Feb. 23.
There are currently 30 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, seven of which are in the intensive care unit.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the district since the start of the pandemic now sits at 2,686.
