THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Friday, bringing the total number of active cases in the district to 29.

All five new cases involve residents of Thunder Bay and the surrounding area, which includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and some unorganized territories.

Four are considered the result of close contact with an existing case, while the cause of transmission for the fifth is listed as pending.

Many of the active cases relate to an outbreak at the Adult and Teen Challenge organization’s men’s and women’s centres, though the health unit did not state Friday whether the new cases were related.

Including Friday's announcement, the health unit has now reported 31 new cases since Nov. 6, most in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area.

Of the district’s 153 total cumulative cases of COVID-19, 119 are considered resolved, including one death that occurred in April.
