THUNDER BAY — The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay district continues to inch upward.

As of Monday morning, there are 17 confirmed cases, three more than the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported on Friday.

This is the highest COVID-19 case count in the district since June 19, 2021, when there were 23 cases.

TBDHU said three of the new cases are the result of travel outside Northwestern Ontario.

All five cases are in the City of Thunder Bay or nearby townships.

Two district residents are receiving treatment for COVID-19 in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit.

TBDHU also reported Monday that three more district cases that were recently identified have been confirmed to involve variants of concern.
