THUNDER BAY – Five new cases of COVID-19 were announced on Friday by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

However, the number of known active cases in the area has dropped to 49, five fewer than was announced on Thursday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began grew to 635, 50 of those cases occurring in 2021.

One of the cases is related to close contact, while another is attributed to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. Two are pending, while one is from Southbridge Roseview nursing home, where an outbreak that began in November has led to the deaths of 20 residents.

There were no new deaths reported in the health unit’s latest numbers, which included cases involving four people in Thunder Bay and surrounding communities and one person deemed to live in a district community.
