DRYDEN, Ont. – The English River Miners and Dryden Ice Dogs are going to have to learn to play nice.
A total of five players were suspended on Saturday after incidents that occurred in the second and third period of the Ice Dogs 5-2 win Friday night to open their best-of-seven Superior International Junior Hockey League final.
Dryden’s Jake Gushue was hit hardest and will miss the rest of the series, suspended for eight games, four games for his actions Friday night and an additional four under Canadian Junior Hockey League guidelines for major penalties and/or game misconducts accumulated in a season.
English River’s Sam Cirone got six games, two from the league and four from the governing body.
English River’s Colton Johnson earned a one-game ban from the CJHL, while teammate Kaden Hintz will sit for a game after a boarding call with 6:39 to go in regulation.
Dryden’s Mark Ziobro also got a one-game suspension.
Dryden’s Braedyn Aubin scored twice and Braeden Allkins had a goal and an assist to lead the Ice Dogs to the win.
Austin Kuhn and Braedan Pearce scored for the Miners.
Game 2 goes Saturday night.
