A group of First Nations teenagers around the region are flying high after being selected to participate in a special aviation camp.

Thirty youth between the ages of 13 and 15 years old from seven different First Nation communities are learning what it takes to become pilots or aircraft mechanical engineers.

Wasaya Airlines is the main sponsor of the week-long camp and pays for all the travel, accommodations and food for the kids and their chaperones. Participants were selected by the chief and council of their communities.

The goal is to get more Aboriginal youths interested in future careers in aviation by exposing them to aircraft simulators and special training equipment at Confederation College's Aviation Centre of Excellence.

Wasaya Airlines president Tom Morris said one of Wasaya's 85 pilots is Aboriginal and he wants to see that number increase in the future.

The third annual aviation camp wraps up on Friday.
